Cryin’ O’Brien’s Tantrum Threatens America’s Small Businesses
Small businesses are the heartbeat of the American economy—employing more than 60 million people, or nearly half the country’s workforce. These entrepreneurs are also responsible for roughly two-thirds of all new job creation. But now Main Street businesses are under threat by union leader Sean O’Brien. And he doesn’t seem to care.
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Sean O’Brien is the President of the Teamsters Union and is putting his ego over thousands of jobs and the well-being of the U.S. economy. O’Brien is picking a fight with employers like the United Parcel Service (UPS), Yellow and TForce, seemingly content to let some companies shut down and thousands of truck drivers lose their jobs.
O’Brien doesn’t seem to care. As The Washington Post put it, “The Teamsters president has big plans to stop your UPS deliveries.”
BIG IMPACT ON THE SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY
If O’Brien doesn’t stop his tantrum and start acting his age, the American supply chain will come screeching to a halt. Small businesses will get the short end of the stick. Unlike larger companies that can operate their own logistics and shipping operations, small businesses depend on trucking and logistics companies to reach their customers.
O’Brien’s destructive mission would have severe consequences that would ripple throughout the economy—threatening small businesses and the jobs that depend on them.

O’Brien doesn’t seem to care about the negative impact his actions will have on the economy and the well-being of small businesses. Strikes and other unreasonable demands to hold back progress hurt the local economy. In just one current example, the ongoing writers strike (which O'Brien proudly supports) is harming countless restaurants, dry cleaners, and equipment rentals in Los Angeles, with some retailers seeing a 25 percent to 40 percent drop in customer traffic.
